Update: Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S arrives on November 10th

[Update: Microsoft has also revealed Xbox Series X price and release date for the US market after this post was published. The most powerful next generation console arrives on November 10th for $499.]

Microsoft revealed the design and price in the US for the most affordable version of its new generation videogame, the Xbox Series S. The console will come in white, it has a large area in black that was made for ventilation and it’s 60% smaller than the Xbox Series X, Microsoft’s most powerful new generation console. The price is $299 and the release date is November 10th. It’s also a affordable choice if you compare with the new Nvidia’s graphic boards, the RTX 3000 series.

The Xbox Series S will be 100% digital, that is, it’ll not have a disc drive – unlike the Xbox Series X. The device will run games in 1440p resolution (with the possibility of upscaling it to 4K) and 120 frames per second (FPS). It will feature ray tracing technology, in which the rays of light are simulated in real time in games, bringing incredibly realistic shadows, reflections and light, along with variable shading and refresh rates. It’ll also have a 512 GB SDD drive for faster load times. Microsoft promises that the Xbox Series S will not have the famous “loading time” in games, just like the Xbox Series X and the PlayStation 5.

Microsoft says the Xbox Series S is the smallest new generation console and it’s an entry-level model, cheaper than the Xbox Series X – which price has yet to be revealed. The focus of the device will be on digital games (since it doesn’t have a disc drive) and will have a very big focus on the Xbox Game Pass service, which offers more than 100 games (including Microsoft releases on day 1) for the payment of a monthly subscription.

Although we already have the specifications for the Xbox One X, we still don’t have the Xbox Series S specs. But just the fact that the Xbox Series S runs games at 1440p at 120 FPS, already makes it a good cheaper competitor to the PS5. The Xbox Series S does even more so if we take into account the backwards compatibility, that is, the Xbox’s ability to run games from all over the Microsoft family of consoles, including the older ones like the first Xbox and Xbox 360. Like the titles on those consoles, Xbox One games will get graphical improvements on both Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S.

We still don’t have all the information about the Xbox Series S. However, Microsoft is expected to reveal its specs and new features in the coming days.

The most powerful brother

Remember that the Xbox Series X runs games in native 4K at 120 FPS. There are 12 teraflops of power (the console’s ability to generate polygons). Ray Tracing technology, which simulates real-time lighting in games, is one of the main new features of the Xbox Series X graphics. With the feature, the graphics will be even more realistic, especially in reflections of puddles, in windows and in metals.

The console uses a custom AMD processor with Zen 2 and RDNA 2 architecture. It will have GDDR 6 RAM and a very high speed NVD SSD drive to store the games. The new drive has the ability to load games automatically, promising to end the loading screens.
