Pokémon UNITE releases on Switch in July and on smartphones in September
Pokemon Unite, MOBA style game (like League of Legends, LoL: Wild Rift and DOTA 2) will arrive free for the Nintendo Switch in July and for cell phones in September. The announcement was made by The Pokémon Company and developer TiMi Studios of Tencent Games.
The pocket monsters game uses the free-to-play model, meaning it’s free to play, but you can buy skins, for example. However, the developer calls the business model “free-to-start”, meaning players can spend real money on items or unlock them with the game, something similar to Pokemon GO.
There will be cross-play and cross-know between Switch and mobile is planned. Pokémon Trainer Club and Nintendo accounts are also compatible, according to the ad.
In the game’s history, Pokémon UNITE takes place on Aeos Island, home to the Unite Battle Committee, a group that organizes Unite Battle tournaments. Teams of five Pokémon fight each other to rack up more points before time runs out, in clashes akin to LoL.
The game features a match ranking system that starts with the Beginner Cup and progresses to the Master Cup. There is also a global leaderboard.
