What is Cyberpunk 2077?

Cyberpunk 2077 is a first-person action role-playing game focused on narrative storytelling and combat. The open world will be massive with many main missions and many side quests to do.

You will be able to create your character, called V, who can be a male or a female, and will perform a series of missions in the city of Night City. In addition to the focus on combat, similar to first-person shooter games, the game will have several dialogues focused on telling us more about the story and the world in which the game takes place. There are hundreds of ways to choose in this story and everything will impact your world.

Release date and platforms

Cyberpunk 2077 will be released on November 19th for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. The release date has been postponed twice already: it was originally planned to be released in April 2020, but it was postponed to September, then to November due to the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic. The justification from the team is that they want to deliver a very high quality experience for all players, so they needed the extra time

On the PC, the game has support for ray tracing technology, which will make the lighting effects even more realistic for computers with Nvidia RTX graphics cards.

In addition to PC and current-gen consoles, it has been confirmed the game will be backwards compatible with the PS5 and Xbox Series X, meaning that anyone who buys the game for the current generation will have a free upgrade to the next generation console of your choice.  On the new generation players can expect much improved graphics and framerate. In addition, with no release date yet, there is a version for Google Stadia that has been announced

Open world

Cyberpunk 2077’s story takes place in, well, 2077, in Night City. In this futuristic world, mega corporations control the lives of the population. The city has skyscrapers showing the wealth of those who live at the top while gangs and poverty fester at the lowest levels. You will see a lot of violence and cyber-modified people living in this environment.

In Night City, you will be able to explore each location such as buildings, industry facilities, shops,as well as making alliances and entering into conflict with all of them. To get around, you will have several futuristic cars and motorcycles.

There is a desert area around the city where you will do several missions as well.

In Cyberpunk 2077, it will be possible to choose three origin stories, and each one has a different starting place in the world. This is called Lifepaths, and you can be a Nomad, Body or Street Kid. Each of the Lifepaths has a different past and starting location, which are strongly connected with the origin story.

Character creation will have plenty of customization options. In addition to being able to choose sex, hair and eye color, as traditionally happens in RPGs, you can choose more private detailes like types of nipples and even pubic hair. There are hundreds of NPC characters with whom you will meet and interact. In addition, you can have romances with any of them.

You will still have friends (some not quite so friendly) who will help you along the journey. One of them is Johnny Silverhand, played by Keanu Reeves. He is a character of the Rockerboy class, the rebel musicians. He is a former guitarist and former vocalist for the band Samurai.

Silverhand will holographically accompany the protagonist V, thanks to a special chip he has implanted in his head. He promises to be a great mystery in the narrative, since his purpose is to guide the player, but it will not always be clear if he is on your side.

Sprawling city

Night City is almost a character in its own right. Inspired by San Francisco and Los Angeles, it is divided into six districts:

  • Watson: immigrants have hidden stores where smugglers sell everything. A place that can yield good missions and items;
  • Pacifica: it is the most dangerous area in the city, full of gangs and illegal activity;
  • City Center: luxurious part of the city, with many beautiful places that are dominated by megacorporations;
  • Westbrook: the favorite spot for the wealthy. Where they come to have fun.
  • Heywood: residential area but full of gangs;
  • Santo Domingo: location of power plants, factories and industries that supply Night City.

In addition to these locations, there are sub-districts and a huge area to explore outside the city. Each location will have its own bosses and rules, so it’s best to be careful. With a dynamic day and night cycle, threats can appear depending on the time of day as well. The police can come after you during the day, but it is the most violent gangs that will give you trouble at night.

The game producers promise that you will be able to enter anywhere, commercial and residential buildings, which will give more life to the game.

Creating your character

There are three classes, but it’s your choices in the game that will define which one your character will belong to:

  • Netrunner: hackers with a cyber interface system implanted in some part of the body.
  • Techie: technicians and experts in cyber technology who work illegally.
  • Solo: Powerful and dangerous mercenaries and hired killers, who almost always do not suffer damage.

Customize your character

The 3 system status’ Strength, Technology and Intelligence, will be linked to the diferent classes. The choices made and the look of V will be some of the features that will shape its characteristics.

Character customization also affects gameplay. A jacket that is well regarded by Netrunners may not appeal to other classes.

The cyber-modifications will turn your character into a unique being, in addition to giving you several abilities. You can use the money received from missions to purchase and upgrade these cybernetic implants that can give you more attack powers or even show you where the enemies are. A mechanical leg can give the player a double jump or arms can give more strength. And everything can be improved as you progress through the story.

Combat

The game is a first-person RPG, so expect intense combat. There will be many weapons to choose from and you will still be able to count on the cyber skills you buy for V.

You are free to decide to go into combat, avoid confrontation or focus on stealth. Of course, this also depends on the mission you enter. If you focus on combat, you can build your character to be more versatile at those times, being more resistant and stronger.

We’re excited for Cyberpunk 2077. If the game isn’t postponed yet again, we’ll be playing the huge RPG on November 19th.
